Phil’s Fitness Diary week 1 – 4

Phil’s account on getting fit at 57 ¼

Week 1

5th October 2017

Today I had my meeting with Gary Telfer and received my training plan for my journey to get fitter and hopefully the Berlin marathon in 2018.

I got a PowerPoint presentation which I wasn’t expecting and it had some uncomfortable truths on it which I think I had elected to forget/Ignore. Things like age/weight and levels of fitness or lack of.

Anyway, came away excited and looking forward to starting my journey towards getting fitter again after such a long break.

9th October 2017

Week 1 of the training starts. Early morning body circuit at home followed by 30 mins on a cycle at the gym (which I had to re-join in preparation) All went ok with no major problems.

10th October 2017

Morning circuit followed by 40 mins in the swimming pool. I hate swimming and always have but have done this session because (It is good for me) ?

12th October 2017

Tempo run on the treadmill 5 mins on 1 min off x 5.  I could not believe how hard that could be and the last effort was very hard. I used to laugh at people doing such a small effort. How the mighty fall!!

15th October 2017

20 min grass run with low heart rate followed by 50 mins in the swimming pool straight after. How knackering does that feel.

Week 1 completed and I have found that I have slept very well this week. Training has given me a good feeling but also made me very tired this week.

Week 2

16th October 2017

Easy Cycle in gym and body circuit. Felt ok but tired from Sundays efforts

17th October 2017

Rested today as felt to knackered to do pool circuit.

20th October 2017

Easy Cycle in gym and body circuit.

22nd October

Easy recovery run along the sea front with Sharon (Wife). Very pleasant getting out in the open. I find running outside so much more pleasurable than on a treadmill and you get to see different areas in more detail than just driving past in the car. Treadmills have a use and some people find it better but as I will be attempting to run outside practice makes perfect.

Week 3

23rd October 2017

Easy cycle at the gym for 40 Mins. Getting used to this session.

26th October 2017

5 x 5mins Tempo run on the treadmill. Found last set hard again. Also Left hamstring felt tight after the session.  Got worse during the day.

27th October 2017

Got the Sharon the Sports therapist to treat my Hamstring and rest of Body. I think there may be more than one problem ☹

Done nothing for rest of week due to hamstring hurting. Also, not sure about cold coming.

Finding it hard to distinguish what is aching due to training and what is starting to get injured and should be nursed a bit. Haven’t had to do this for a very long time.

Week 4

29th October 2017

Got cold and left leg still playing up. Getting a bit grumpy that I can’t just train like I used to in the “old days”. The joys of getting older.

2nd November 2017

Treatment from Gary Telfer. What I thought was a tight hamstring turns out to be a tight back, problem with the piriformis and general running technique. How can I have bad technique after 30 years of running!! Made an appointment for Saturday.

4th November 2017

Treatment with Gary was interesting. Parts of my body that I didn’t know hurt do now. Apparently, a lot of my problems are because my left foot does not roll through properly and I land fairy flat which is putting train on my shins and my alignment isn’t what it should. Have been given some exercises to do and try and get me not hurting myself.
